The job that costs you when it slips
Paying staff, or paying yourself a salary, means becoming an employer in HMRC eyes, and that means a PAYE scheme set up before payday. The references take time to come through, and getting the setup wrong causes headaches with your very first pay run.
Plenty of new companies start paying people before they are registered, or set the scheme up incorrectly, and then have to unpick Real Time Information problems later. It is far easier to get the foundation right from the start.
- Needing to register before the first payday
- PAYE references that take days to arrive
- Director salaries that still need a PAYE scheme
- Getting the scheme setup wrong from the outset
- CIS registration needed as well in construction
- Real Time Information to file from day one
Hand it over, and consider it handled
Before you can pay employees, or pay yourself a director salary through the company, you usually need to register as an employer with HMRC and set up a PAYE scheme. It needs to be done before your first payday, and the reference numbers can take a little time to come through.
We register you as an employer, set up the PAYE scheme properly, and make sure you are ready to operate Real Time Information from your first pay run. If you would like, we run the payroll itself so the whole thing is handled.

The honest answers to what you’re thinking
Can I not register with HMRC myself?
You can, but the setup choices matter and the references take time. We register you correctly and early so your first pay run is not delayed or filed wrongly, and we can run the payroll from there.
Do I really need PAYE just to pay myself?
Usually yes. A director salary paid through the company normally needs a PAYE scheme so it is reported under Real Time Information, even if the amount is small. We set it up as part of getting your company going.
I have already paid someone, am I in trouble?
Not necessarily, but it needs sorting promptly. We can register you and get the Real Time Information position corrected so it does not become a bigger problem.
What if I only need it occasionally?
We will advise on whether a scheme is needed and set it up appropriately. For irregular or one-off situations, we make sure you are reporting correctly without over-complicating it.
