What is payroll for contractors?

Payroll for contractors, done properly

As a contractor working through your own limited company, payroll isn’t about a big team — it’s about running your director’s salary at the most efficient level and reporting it to HMRC correctly through PAYE and Real Time Information.

We set your salary at the optimal point alongside your dividends, run the PAYE, file RTI on time, and handle your P60 and year-end — usually bundled with your limited company accounts so the whole thing is one fixed fee.

FAQ

Payroll for contractors — your questions answered

Do contractors need to run payroll?
If you take any salary from your own limited company, yes — it has to go through PAYE and be reported to HMRC via RTI, even if you’re the only director. We run it for you so it’s done correctly without any effort on your part.
What salary should a contractor take?
Most contractors take a modest salary around the National Insurance thresholds and the rest as dividends, because that’s usually the most tax-efficient mix. The exact figure depends on your circumstances — we work it out and run it for you.
Is this the same as umbrella payroll?
No. Umbrella companies employ you and run PAYE on your full income. We run payroll for your own limited company — your tax-efficient director’s salary — which, combined with dividends, is typically more efficient if you’re outside IR35.
Can you add my spouse to the payroll?
Yes, where they genuinely work in the business and it’s commercially justifiable, we can put a spouse or first employee on the payroll and run it alongside yours.
How much does contractor payroll cost?
It’s usually included in your fixed monthly fee alongside your limited company accounts and tax return, so there’s rarely a separate charge — and the efficient pay structure typically saves far more than the cost.
