Sound familiar?

The bits no one warns you about

Your eBay payout is never your sales total. By the time Managed Payments pays out, eBay has deducted final value fees, the per-order charge, the regulatory operating fee, ad fees and refunds — and added VAT to all of it.

Reconciling that against your orders by hand is where the hours and the errors pile up — and it’s how business sellers lose track of their real margin or get caught out by a VAT bill.

  • Managed Payments payouts netted of fees, ad costs and refunds
  • Final value fees that vary by category, plus the 30p per-order charge
  • The 0.35% regulatory operating fee and 20% VAT on fees
  • Knowing when private selling becomes a taxable business
  • VAT on UK and cross-border (EU OSS) sales
  • Promoted Listings spend eating into margin
How we help

Everything handled, under one roof

eBay’s fees are easy to underestimate and hard to reconcile: a final value fee on the whole sale, a 30p fixed charge per order, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and 20% VAT on top — all netted off your Managed Payments payout before it reaches your bank.

We’re specialist eBay accountants. We connect your account to cloud software, reconcile every payout properly, handle UK and cross-border VAT, and show you the profit you’re really making — by listing and by category.

Still deciding?

The honest answers to what you’re thinking

How much does an eBay accountant cost?

We agree a fixed monthly fee based on your sales volume and VAT footprint. For most sellers it’s comfortably less than the margin we recover once your payouts and VAT are actually reconciled.

When does eBay selling become a taxable business?

If you’re buying or making things to sell on for a profit, HMRC generally treats you as trading — and you may need to register and declare the income, even below the VAT threshold. We help you work out which side of the line you’re on and get registered correctly.

Do I need to register for VAT to sell on eBay?

Not until your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. Once you do, you charge UK VAT, can reclaim the VAT eBay charges on its fees, and we handle the quarterly returns.

Do private eBay sellers pay any fees or tax?

Since October 2024 UK private sellers pay no eBay selling fees on standard categories — but if your activity amounts to trading, the profit can still be taxable. The fees and the tax are two separate questions, and we help with both.

FAQ

eBay sellers: your questions answered

What does an eBay accountant do?
We handle the accounting built around selling on eBay: connecting Managed Payments to cloud software, reconciling your payouts, tracking final value, regulatory and ad fees, managing UK and EU VAT, filing your accounts and tax, and reporting your true profit by listing.
How much does an accountant cost for an eBay business?
It depends on your sales volume and VAT position. We quote a fixed monthly fee up front so there are no surprises as you scale — and it usually costs less than the profit we uncover by getting your fees and VAT right.
Is my eBay payout the same as my profit?
No. Your Managed Payments payout is what’s left after eBay deducts final value fees, the per-order charge, the regulatory fee, ad costs and refunds — and it ignores your cost-of-goods and VAT. We reconcile it all so you see the real number. Our free eBay fee calculator gives you a quick per-sale estimate.
How does VAT work for eBay sellers?
Once you’re VAT registered you charge 20% UK VAT on UK sales, can reclaim the VAT eBay charges on its fees, and account for EU sales through the OSS scheme where relevant. We handle the lot, MTD-compliant.
Do I have to declare my eBay income to HMRC?
If you’re trading — buying or making to sell for a profit — yes, the income is taxable and may need a Self Assessment, even below the VAT threshold. Genuine clear-outs of your own used items usually aren’t. We help you work out and meet your obligations.
Can you take over from my current accountant?
Yes, and we manage the whole handover for you — most eBay sellers are up and running with us within a couple of weeks.
